Intramural Sport (IMS) at Loughborough is designed to promote 'participation through sport' to develop friendships between fellow students within your own and neighboring Halls. Students of all abilities are encouraged to participate, as well as those, for a variety of reasons, unable to play regular inter-university sport.
All you need is the desire to participate, not a high level of skill. This in no way suggests that the standard of play does not match the enthusiasm of the game. Because of the generally very high level of sport within the University, the standard of play by both teams as well as individuals in Intramural events is often very high.
History (return to top)
The programme started in the Spring Term of the academic year 1956-57. At that time the events were between departmental teams. With the development of additional accommodation in the student village, thus evolved the inter-hall competition.
From the beginning the programme has been planned and directed by a member of the Physical Education, Sports Science & Recreation Management staff. Between 1969 - 1999 Mr. Pat Stone, lecturer in biomechanics, directed and developed the programme. Through Pat's guidance, enthusiasm and passionate desire to encourage 'participation' at all levels in recreation and sports activities at Loughborough, the programme has developed into the most extensive university intramural programme in the U.K.
Sports Secretaries Committee (return to top)
Sports Secretaries from each Hall committee comprise the group that help run and 'govern' IMS. They attend weekly meetings where decisions are taken on fixture changes, general organisation, eligibility and any other problems that may arise.
The Committee elects its own chairperson from among past Sports Secretaries.
Athletic Union Clubs (return to top)
For many years now the University Clubs have been invaluable by providing most of the officials and some technical support for events together with the backing of the Athletic Union. The Chair of Sports Secretaries has become an executive member of the Athletic Union and forms the important link with the A.U. Clubs, liasing with them over any issues or problems.
Trophies (return to top)
At the end of the year there is a presentation evening when the winning Halls receive trophies. Individual event trophies are awarded as well as the men's Bowmaker Trophy, won last year by Rutherford, the Women's Inter Varsity Athletic Board Trophy won by Falkner-Eggington, and the Phoenix Trophy winners, (mens) Telford, and (women's) Telford.

Congratulations to all four halls and also well done to all the others who took part throughout the year.
New Trophies awarded in 2000 (return to top)
The Pat Stone Trophy, Intramural Sport, Overall Winners:
To acknowledge the immeasurable contribution over the past 30 years (1969-1999) that Pat Stone dedicated to the development of Loughborough's Intramural Sport Programme, the Sports Development Centre introduced this Trophy to be awarded to the Hall with the biggest combined men's and women's points total - the overall winner.
The David Bone Football Trophy (return to top)
This Trophy was donated by the students of Forest Court Hall (1998-99) in memory of David Bone who died after an accident whilst playing Intramural football in March 1999.
New Trophies Awarded in 2001 (return to top)
IMS Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year:
It was decided that the contribution of certain individuals to IMS should be rewarded in a formal manner. The Sports Development Centre awarded one man and one woman an engraved plate to recognise their effort, commitment, enthusiasm and team spirit within IMS. In this first year, the plates went to Christy Oram, and John 'Barney' James, both of Rutherford Hall.
Phoenix Trophies (return to top)
The Men's and Women's Phoenix Trophies have been donated by Mr. Pat Stone and Mrs. Mavis Stone, respectively. These are for the Halls showing the most improvement from last years results.
Safety in Sport (return to top)
Safety in sport is very important. Please help to ensure that everyone keeps their own and other people's safety in mind at all times. Please don't hesitate to contact the organisers if you have any questions regarding safety issues.
General Organisation (return to top)
Sports Secretaries need, and deserve, the support of all Hall members to organise, captain, take part in and support teams. It is hoped that everyone will find some activity in which they can enjoy.
Good luck everyone and enjoy the competition!
