Sport Secretaries (or ‘Sport Sec’s’ as they are more commonly known), are the people on their Hall of Residence committee, who are responsible for organising all the Intramural Sports teams. They should know everything about Hall sport, plus a bit about other Sports events happening on campus.
The job can be very busy, with 58 IMS fixtures on average taking place each week, the Sport Sec has his or her work cut out.
You can spot a Sport Sec a mile off, they’ll be the one wearing IMS stash (all the time – do they ever wash it??), wandering round either leading a load of sporty looking people over campus en route to a fixture, or perhaps going round Halls door to door, trying to persuade people to come and play an obscure IMS sport.
Sport Secs are sociable people by nature, and if you know them it’s more than likely you’ll be playing IMS sooner or later.
It’s a fun job though, and most Sport Sec’s get a real buzz from the hard work they put in, even when their team loses! It’s great for the CV too, plus you get inside info about of cool jobs like working at the International Athletics, the Rugby ‘Real’ Varsity match and lots of other Loughborough events.
Sport Secs often need help organising teams, so if you are keen, you can offer them your support.
Many former Sport Secs have gone on to become Hall Chairperson, Loughborough Athletic Union President, and many now hold prestigious positions in sport on a local, national and international level.
If you think you would be interested in becoming a Sport Sec, watch out for information about Hall elections in your Hall of Residence. Get involved!
