Triple Crown for Loughborough IMS

IMS Varsity Cup

The annual test of Intramural supremacy was hosted here on campus for the 2nd time, as Loughborough’s best IMS teams took on Nottingham Uni’s best. The event was once again supported by Loughborough IMS sponsors, Accenture.

After winning away last year, Loughborough teams were looking to use home advantage to retain the IMS Varsity Cup, and improve on the 6 wins they achieved last year.

Nottingham had some last minute team changes (perhaps they were worried?) but 2pm saw football, basketball and netball all kick off, with rugby and hockey to follow.

Football:  Falk Egg once again took on the mantle of champions, and scored either side of half time to take a convincing 2-0 win over Derby Hall.  First blood to Loughborough.  Royce took on Cripps Hall old boys in the second match, and it was heading for a 2-2 draw, until a controversial penalty decision (is there another kind?) gave Royce the edge, and they struck again to finish 4-2 winners.

Hockey saw mixed teams from Loughborough come off worst.  Faraday lost 2-3 to Broadgate Park 1sts and Falk Egg boys & Telford girls lost 0-3 to Hu Stu.  Notts mixed hockey experience showed through.

Netball saw a turnaround, as both home teams won convincingly.  Royce beat Sociology 27-12, and Harry French beat Hu Stu 11-8.

Basketball had many highlights.  DC came from 15 points down against the Malaysian Society to tie the game with 2 mins remaining.  A series of free throws secured the win by only 2 points.  In the next match, Towers struggled against a super strong Lithuanians team.  Play of the day was a huge 2 handed dunk from their #12 – too good for IMS!

Finally the rugby saw two great matches with action galore.  Rutherford put a strong Ancaster team to the sword, 24-10 with some scintillating play all round.  Faraday crowds dominated the sidelines, and watched their boys go ahead early against Derby Hall, concede 2 breakaway tries, but finish strong to record a 24-12 win.

This gave Loughborough IMS an overall won 7, lost 3 record, which ensured the IMS Varsity Cup stayed where it belongs for another year.

Fusion saw the presentations with medals for all players, and ‘most valuable player’ awards for all sports:

Football:  Chris Carter (Cripps Hall old boys)

Hockey:  Sarah Williams ( Broadgate Park 1sts)

Netball:  Felicity Drake (Harry French)

Basketball:  Ross Kelk (David Collett)

Rugby :  Carling Colfer (Rutherford)

Best supported Hall:  Faraday – massive crowd, face/body paint, drums, the lot!

Well done to all the players, thanks to all the referees and umpires, and Accenture for supporting the event, and once again we’ve proved that even Loughborough IMS ‘walks on water’!
