IMS Varsity Cup - 4th time lucky

It's not just a win, it's turning into a dynasty!  Four consecutive wins in this competition.

Falk Egg Football Team

Every March, the best Intramural teams from Loughborough University and Nottingham University go head to head in 6 different sports.  When it started in 2006, the competition was tight, and has been every year since, but in 2009 all that changed.

The final score was Loughborough 9, Nottingham 2, but even that didn't tell the full story.

Over three hundred loyal Loughborough supporters caught the buses to support, and when the sport kicked off, it looked ominous, as the Notts tennis team won convincingly 4-0 against Faraday's finest.  When both Elvyn and Bill Mo conceded early tries in the rugby, as Faraday went 1-0 down in the football, we were wondering where the first Loughborough win would come from.

But not to worry, when the final whistle sounded, Faraday had come back to win 3-1 in football, and Falk Egg continued their undefeated season to win 3-0.

Bill Mo displayed Houdini-esque capabilities to come back from 17-5 down to win 17-19 in the rugby, and although Elvyn lost, the score was a respectable 12-7 to Derby Hall, whose performance would have done their University teams proud...

Mixed hockey, traditionally a weak 'Lufbra' sport (as we don't have mixed leagues) proved the opposite as our teams consisting of players from Telford & Cayley, Rutherford & Rigg Rut won easily, 4-1 and 9-4.

In netball, Elvyn and Bill Mo totally outclassed their opponents winning 26-2 and 23-12 respectively.

Finally the basketball saw a comfortable win for David Collett, and the Cayley boys left it late but won by a solitary point against the impressive Lithuanian society.

It was a fitting end to the reign of the current IMS Exec, Wellie Clark, Annie Poole and Rich Smith, who takes up his post of AU President in August.

So another year saw another IMS Varsity Cup win for Loughborough.  Maybe next year we will invite a third University's IMS teams to take us on?

(Video Highlights will be on the live Loughborough Gold show on Thursday 26th March).
